Superior Hypogastric Nerve Blocks

The superior hypogastric plexus contains afferent pain fibers from the organs in the pelvis (bladder, viscera, uterus, vagina, rectum, descending colon).  The block can serve a diagnostic purpose (to identify visceral or sympathetically-mediated pain) but can also provide longer relief by essentially breaking the cycle of pain signals through these nerves.
