Piriformis Injection

A piriformis injection is an injection of steroid into the piriformis muscle in the buttock.  It is used to treat piriformis syndrome, which is a condition in which the piriformis muscle tightens or spasms and causes pain in the buttock as well as sciatic nerve pain down the back of the leg.  The steroid will help reduce the inflammation of the muscle and the irritated nerve.  The procedure is performed with the patient lying on their stomach either at the bedside or using x-ray guidance.
